ليI have حَبيبٌa beloved يَزيدُgrows فيin كُلِّevery يومٍday
حُبُّهُlove for him مِثلَماjust as يَزيدُgrows الهِلالُthe crescent moon
I have a beloved; day by day grows
I have a lover who grows dearer day by day
my love for him, as the crescent moon grows.
His love increases even as the crescent moon
كَثُرَgrew numerous الحاسِدونَthe envious يَالَغَراميalas for my passion!
فيin هَواهُlove for him وَقَلَّتِand grew fewer العُذّالُthe reproachers
The envious have grown many—alas for my passion!—
Many envious ones blame my passion, alas
in my love for him, while the reproachers have grown few.
For him, while the chiders are few
قَدindeed أَظَلَّcast shade over الوُفودَthe delegations وَهُوَwhile he is صَباحٌmorning
وَأَذَلَّand humbled الأُسودَthe lions وَهُوَwhile he is غَزالُa gazelle
He has cast shade over the delegations, though he is morning,
He has outshone the radiant dawn, yet he is a fawn
and humbled lions, though he is a gazelle.
He has humbled the lions, yet he is a gazelle
فَقَريبانِso both are near هَجرُهُhis abandonment وَالتَنائيand separation
وَبَعيدانِand both are far سَلوَتيmy forgetting him وَالوِصالُand union
So near are his abandonment and separation,
Soon we shall part and cease to meet
and far off are my forgetting him and union with him.
While still remote are my joy and union with him
فَوَحَقِّso, by the truth of الإِلَهِGod إِنّيindeed I am لِعَينٍto an eye
أَسهَرَتنيhas kept me awake عَينُthe letter ʿayn وَباءٍand the letter bāʾ وَدالُand the letter dāl
So, by God's truth, I am, to an eye
By God, because of an eye
that has kept me awake, ʿayn–bāʾ–dāl: a slave.
That has deprived me of sleep, tender and languorous
