وَصاحِبٍand a friend يَتَلَقّانيhe greets me لِحاجَتِهِfor his need
بِالرَحبِwith a warm welcome وَهوَand he is مَليحُpleasing الخَلقِin appearance وَالخُلُقِand in character
And many a companion greets me because he has need of me,
And a friend greets me to meet his own need,
with a lavish welcome, fair in form and character.
With warmth, pleasing in appearance and character,
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle اِنقَضَتit was fulfilled وَلّىhe turned away وَخَلَّفَنيand left me behind

Then, once his need is fulfilled, he turns away, leaving me
Until, once his need is met, he turns away and leaves me
more despised than a rat in the chamber of a man at ease—
More despised than a rat in a privy.
كَالماءِlike water بَيناwhile تَرىyou see الظَمآنَthe thirsty man يَشرَبُهُhe drinks it
حَتّىuntil يُبَدِّدَhe scatters باقيهِwhat remains of it عَلىupon الطُرُقِthe roads
like water: while you watch the thirsty man drink it,
Like water: you see the thirsty man drinking it,
until he spills what remains of it along the roads.
Only to scatter what remains upon the roads.
