O branch of bān, swaying in intoxication,

And full moon, in whom my fortune falls short.

How long will you rend my heart with rejection, out of hatred,

When no one but you dwells within it?

Who will bring me one with cool, sweet teeth, smiling to reveal hailstones

That never melt, though fires burn in his cheeks?

    وَكيفَ لا تَخشى وَهُوَ ثُعبانُ

    I fear for his shoulders because of his hanging lock;

And how could you not fear, when it is a serpent?

And how often I concealed my love for him before the woman who reproached me,

Yet concealment has not helped the companion of tears.

And many a night I spent watching for his phantom; yet sleep was refused

By my eye, though it is said that sleep is a sovereign.

And how can a forsaken lover slumber, kept awake by

One slender of figure, smooth of cheek, bewitching?

    وَكَيفَ يُمنَعُ وِردَ الماءِ ظَمآنُ

    I was denied a sip from his front teeth and his saliva;

And how can a thirsty man be denied access to water?

And slanderers parted us, and so were parted

My eyelids at night, through separation from him.

Sweet to suffer for, dark of cheek-down, he possesses

Form and character, and beauty in which goodness dwells.

So if Quss had pondered the qualities I ascribed to him,

He would have spoken more beautifully than Hassan did.
