يَاO أَلفَclose companion مَولايَmy lord أَينَwhere الأَلفُthe thousand دينارِdinar
Say to al-Salah, my helper in my hardship:
O my lord’s close companion, where are the thousand dinars?
أَخشىI fear مِنَfrom الأَسرِcaptivity إِنif حاوَلتُI try to reach أَرضِكُمyour land

I fear captivity if I make for your land,
And the garden of Paradise cannot make up for Hellfire.

So give them freely—inscribed dinars of al-ʿAdid—
From some of what the tyrant, Father of Shame, left behind:

Red as your swords, bright as your horses,
Old as my enemies, heavy as my rags.
