ليfor me كُلَّevery حينٍmoment مِنfrom أَحِبّايَmy beloveds حَينdoom
وَكُلَّand every يَومٍday بَينَbetween هَجرٍestrangement وَبَينand separation
At every moment, doom comes to me from my beloveds,
Every moment I have with my loved ones is a moment
and every day I am between estrangement and separation.
And every day between estrangement and closeness
سارواthey departed وَماand not وَدَّعتُهُمI bade them farewell جَفوَةًcoldness
مِنهُمfrom them وَقَدand indeed عُدتُI returned بِخُفَّيwith the two slippers of حُنَينHunayn
They departed, and I did not bid them farewell, owing to coldness
They left without me bidding them farewell out of aloofness
on their part; and I returned with Hunayn’s two slippers, empty-handed.
Yet still I returned with hidden, bitter yearning
وَكَيفَand how يَقوَىhas strength بِسُهادٍin sleeplessness عَلىagainst
دَمعٍtears غَزيرٍcopious مَنone who لَهُhe has فَردُa single عَينeye
And how, sleepless, can he endure
How can one with wakefulness prevail over
copious tears, he who has but a single eye?
Copious tears if left all alone
