وَمُهَفهَفٌand a slender youth كَالرُمحِlike a spear يَحمِلُcarries مِثلَهُits like
قَتَلَslew الوَرىmankind وَسنانُهُhis drowsy gaze وَسِنانُهُand his spearhead
And a slender youth, like a spear, carries its like;
Like a spear carrier, another spear wielder,
his drowsy gaze and his spearhead have slain mankind.
He killed mankind, his teeth and his teeth,
فارَقتُهُI parted from him وَفَرِقتُand I feared عِندَat وَداعِهِhis farewell
مِنof صارِمٍa keen sword أَجفانُهُits sheaths أَجفانُهُhis eyelids
I parted from him, and at his farewell I was afraid
I bid him farewell when we parted,
of a keen sword whose sheaths are his eyelids,
A sharp sword, his eyelids, his eyelids,
فيin لَيلَةٍa night طالَتgrew long عَلَيَّfor me كَأَنَّهاas though it were
عِطفاهُhis two flanks أَوor صُدغاهُhis two sidelocks أَوor هِجرانُهُhis abandonment
on a night that grew long for me, as though it were
On a night that was prolonged as if
his flanks, or his sidelocks, or his abandonment,
It was his sidelocks, his temple, or his departure,
حَتّىuntil بَداappeared فَلَقُthe break الصَباحِof dawn كَأَنَّهُas though it were
وَجهُthe face الأَميرِof the emir وَعِرضُهُand his honor وَجِفانُهُand his serving bowls
until the break of dawn appeared, as though it were
Until the dawn cracks appeared as if
the emir's face, and his honor, and his serving bowls.
It was the face of the prince, his honor and his eyelids,
أَحياrevived مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad السَماحَgenerosity وَقَبلَهُand before him
مامينُهُhis Mamin وَعَلِيُّهُand his Ali وَبُرانُهُand his Buran
Muhammad revived generosity, and before him,
Muhammad revived benevolence and accepted it
his Mamin, and his Ali, and his Buran.
His caretakers, his Ali, and his righteous ones,
مَلِكٌa king يَجودُgives generously بِمالِهِof his wealth وَبِنَفسِهِand of himself
وَبِذاكَand to that يَشهَدُbears witness حِصنُهُhis fortress وَحِصانُهُand his steed
A king who gives freely of his wealth and of himself;
A king who gives generously with his wealth and himself
and to that his fortress and his steed bear witness.
And with that his fortress and his steed bear witness,
فاقَsurpassed الأَنامَmankind جَمالُهُhis beauty وَجَميلُهُand his good deeds
لاnot حُسنُهُhis beauty يَفنىperishes وَلاand not إِحسانُهُhis beneficence
His beauty and his good deeds have surpassed all mankind;
His beauty and charm surpassed people
his beauty does not perish, nor does his beneficence.
His beauty does not fade, nor his favor,
بِالصالحِthrough al-Salih المَلِكِthe king الأَغَرِّthe illustrious صَلاحُهُhis well-being
لاmay never فارَقَتpart from أَوطارَهُhis wishes أَوطانُهُhis homelands
His well-being comes through al-Salih, the illustrious king;
With the righteous king, his rectitude is most strange
may his homelands never part from his wishes.
He did not abandon his lands, his homelands.
