وَمُهَفهَفٍand a slender youth نادَيتُهُI called to him لَمّاwhen بَداhe appeared
مُتَهَلِّلاًbeaming بِجَمالِهِwith his beauty مُتَبَسِّماsmiling
And I called to a slender youth when he appeared,
When he appeared, radiant in his beauty, smiling,
Radiant with his beauty, smiling:
I called to him, enthralled.
أَمُوَلَّدَO offspring of الأَتراكِthe Turks إِنَّindeed مُوَلَّدَan offspring of
الأَعرابِthe Bedouin Arabs أَضحىhas become فيin هَواكَlove for you مُتَيَّماenslaved by love
O offspring of the Turks, indeed an offspring
He was born to Turkish nobility - but in your love
Of the Bedouin Arabs has become enslaved by love for you.
He has become an Arab nomad, smitten.
لاdo not تَشرَبَنdrink (emphatic) كَأسَthe cup of المُدامَةِwine وَاِسقِنيand give me drink
شَفَتاكَyour two lips قَدalready سَقَتاكَhave both given you drink مِنfrom ماءِthe water of اللَمىthe lips' dusky tint
Do not drink the cup of wine; give me drink—
Do not drink from the cup of wine - give me
Your lips have already given you drink of their dusky moisture.
Your lips, which have already intoxicated me.
لَوif كانَwere قَلبُكَyour heart مِثلَlike عَطفِكَyour flank لَيِّناًsoft; pliant
ماnot كانَwould be حَظّيmy fortune مِثلُlike صُدغِكَyour temple-lock مُظلِماdark
If your heart were as pliant as your flank,
If your heart were as gentle as your embrace,
My fortune would not be as dark as your temple-lock.
My fate would not be as dark as your cheekbone.
وَيلاهُwoe to me! كَمhow often بِغَرارِwith the edge of صارِمٍa keen sword لَحظِهِhis glance
وَسِنانِand the spearhead of صَعدَةِthe lance of قَدِّهِhis stature أَجرىhe shed دَماblood
Alas! How often, with the edge of his glance's keen sword
Alas - how many sharp, unsheathed swords in his glance,
And the spearhead of his stature's lance, he has shed blood!
How much blood his proud neck has spilled!
وَكَأَنَّand as though نَمّاماًa fragrant herb بِرَوضَةِin the garden of خَدَّهِhis cheek
لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw عَذارَهُhis cheek-down قَدalready نَمنَماembroidered; finely patterned
And it was as though a fragrant herb in his cheek's garden,
As if a gossip were whispering in the garden of his cheek
When I saw his cheek-down, had embroidered it.
When I saw its blossoms stir and murmur.
قَمَرٌa moon بِواضِحِthrough the brightness of ثَغرِهِhis mouth وَجَبينِهِand his brow
غَدَتِbecame السماءُthe sky الأَرضَthe earth وَالأَرضُand the earth السَماthe sky
A moon! Through the radiance of his mouth and brow,
With his shining lips and brow, the moon
The sky became the earth, and the earth the sky.
Has made the earth into the sky, the sky into earth.
