For whom are the ruins between Juddah and the mountain,
An ancient dwelling over which long ages have passed.
An ancient abode where nights were spent?

It faded, unfrequented, and passed like a long-bodied steed;
It was abandoned, with no visitors passing by,
And a brimming hollow grew unrecognizable and vanished.
And became unrecognizable as it faded away.

Without inhabitants; whoever dwelt there departed.
Leaving it uninhabited after its dwellers left.

My tears flowed down my cheeks.

I would captivate singing slave-girls,
And some of them captivated me with coquetry and eyes.
And they would captivate me with coquetry and ogling.

As if drops of musk on their breasts
Upon a curve and both shoulders—a pound's worth bestowed.
Were poured onto a curve and the shoulders.

Living luxuriously amid brocade, jewelry, and robes.
Luxuriating in brocade, jewelry, and anklets.

He would become infatuated, obsessed with loving her,
As though he had never fasted a day for God or prayed.
As if he had never fasted or prayed to God.

When her father was absent at night or inattentive!

They said, 'Can the crescent moon be hidden when it sets?
For can the crescent moon escape notice when it sets?”

She is the one whom my heart loved,
Slender, fair, pearl-bright in her kisses.
Dazzling and white, a gazelle of kisses.

They would not stop jingling.

She said, 'I am a Kindite, an Arab.'
She said: “I am Kindite, Arab.”
I said to her, 'Far from it! And no! And whether? And rather!'
I said: “Certainly not! Never! Absurd!”
فقَالتso she said أَنَاI رُومِيَّةٌa Roman woman عَجَمِيَّةa non-Arab woman
فقُلتُso I said لهاto her ورخِيزwarkhīz (unclear foreign word) بِباخُوشَbibākhūsh (unclear foreign word) مِنmin (unclear here) قُزَلquzal (unclear foreign word)
She said, 'I am a Roman, a non-Arab.'
She said: “I am Roman, non-Arab.”
I said to her, 'Warkhīz bibākhūsh min quzal' [unclear foreign phrase].
I said: “Get out, scram, you mangy dog!”
فَلَمَّاso when تَلاقَيناwe met وجَدتُI found بَنانَهher fingertips
مُخَضّبَةًdyed تَحكىresembling الشَوَاعِلَblazing torches بِالشُّعَلwith flames
When we met, I found her fingertips
When we met, I found her lips
Dyed, resembling torches ablaze.
Dyed, telling of passion with flames.
ولاعَبتُهاand I played with her الشِّطرَنجchess خَيلىmy knights تَرَادَفَتfollowed one another
ورُخّىand my rook عَليهاagainst her دارَwheeled بِالشاهِaround the king بالعَجَلin haste
I played chess with her; my knights followed one another,
I played her chess, my horses in a row,
And my rook wheeled against her king in haste.
And castled against her hastily.
فَقَالَتso she said ومَاand not هَذاthis شَطَارَةthe cleverness of لَاعِبٍa player
ولكِنbut قَتلَslaying الشَّاهِthe king بالفِيلِwith the elephant-piece هُوis الأَجَلthe appointed end
She said, 'And this is no player's cleverness;
She said: “This is no skill of a player!
But slaying the king with the elephant-piece is the appointed end.'
But killing the king with a pawn is fate.”
فَنَاصَبتُهاso I challenged her مَنصُوبَa chess setup بِالفِيلِwith the elephant-piece عَاجِلswift
مِنَfrom اثنَينِtwo فيin تِسعٍnine بِسُرعٍquickly فَلَمso I did not أَمَلgrow weary
So I challenged her with a swift elephant-piece setup,
So I mated her in two moves with the pawn, hastily,
From two in nine, quickly, and I did not tire.
And did not slacken.
وقَدand indeed كانَwas لَعبيmy play كُلَّevery دَستٍgame بِقُبلَةٍfor a kiss
أُقَبِّلُI kiss ثَغراًa mouth كَالهِلَالِlike the crescent moon إِذَاwhen أَفَلit sets
And my play in every game was for a kiss:
My every move was with a kiss
I kiss a mouth like the crescent moon as it sets.
On lips like a crescent moon when it sets.
فَقَبَّلتُهَاso I kissed her تِسعاًnine وتِسعِينَand ninety قُبلَةًa kiss
ووَاحِدَةًand one أَيضاًalso وكُنتُand I was عَلَىin عَجَلhaste
So I gave her ninety-nine kisses,
I kissed her ninety-nine kisses,
And one more besides, and I was in haste.
And one more - and I was in a hurry.
وعَانَقتُهَاand I embraced her حَتَّىuntil تَقَطَّعَbroke apart عِقدُهَher necklace
وحَتَّىand until فَصُوصُthe gems of الطَّوقِthe collar مِنfrom جِيدِهَاher neck انفَصَلcame loose
I embraced her until her necklace broke,
I embraced her until her necklace broke
And until the gems of her collar came loose from her neck.
And the clusters of her choker scattered.
كأَنَّas though فُصُوصَthe gems of الطَوقِthe collar لَمَّاwhen تَنَاثَرَتthey scattered
ضِيَاءُthe light of مَصابِيحٍlamps تَطَايَرنَflying out عَنfrom شَعَلa flame
As though the gems of the collar, when they scattered,
It was as if when the clusters of her choker scattered,
Were the light of lamps flying out from a flame.
The light of lamps flew from a flame.
وآخِرُand the last of قَولِيmy words مِثلُlike مَاwhat قَلتُI said أَوَّلat first
طَلَلٌa ruined campsite بَينَbetween الجُدَيَّةِal-Judayya والجبَلand al-Jabal
And the last of my words is like what I said at first:
My final words are like my first:
Whose ruined camp lies between al-Judayya and al-Jabal?
For whom are the ruins between Juddah and the mountain?
