    وَلَكِن حَديثاً ما حَديثُ الرَواحِلِ

    Leave aside the plunder, with cries raised all around it;

    And yet the riding-camels' tale—what a tale!

    As though Dithar's milk camels had been carried aloft

    By an eagle of Tanufa, not an eagle of al-Qawa'il.

    Ba'ith trifled with Khalid's pledge of protection,

    And 'Isam perished amid the earlier calamities.

    And I marveled at Khalid's gait—the gait of a squat man,

    Like the gait of a she-ass driven from the watering places.

    فَمَن شاءَ فَليَنهَض لَها مِن مُقاتِلِ

    Aja has refused this year to surrender her protected neighbor;

    So let any fighter who wishes rise against her.

    وَأَسرَحَنا غَبّاً بِأَكنافِ حائِلِ

    My milk-giving camels spend the night in al-Qurayya, safe;

    And he sent us out to graze every other day around Ha'il.

    The sons of Thu'al are their neighbors and protectors,

    And she protects them from the archers of Sa'd and Na'il.

    Their spring-born calves play with the young ibex,

    Just below the sky, on the crests of the citadels.

    Crowned, red, and bearing ridges,

    She has patterned bands, as though made of striped cloths.
