إِنَّ بَني عَوفَ اِبتَنوا حَسَباً

إِنَّ بَني عَوفَ اِبتَنوا حَسَباً

ضَيَّعَهُ الدُخلُلونَ إِذ غَدَروا

ضَيَّعَهُ الدُخلُلونَ إِذ غَدَروا

Indeed, the sons of ʿAwf built up noble repute,

which the interlopers ruined when they broke faith.

أَدّوا إِلى جارِهِم خَفارَتِهِ

أَدّوا إِلى جارِهِم خَفارَتِهِ

وَلَم يَضَع بِالمَغيبِ مَن نَصَروا

وَلَم يَضَع بِالمَغيبِ مَن نَصَروا

They gave their neighbor the protection owed him,

and none they supported was forsaken when absent.

لَم يَفعَلوا فِعلَ آلِ حَنظَلَةٍ

لَم يَفعَلوا فِعلَ آلِ حَنظَلَةٍ

إِنَّهُم جيرِ بِئسَ ما اِئتَمَروا

إِنَّهُم جيرِ بِئسَ ما اِئتَمَروا

They did not act as the house of Ḥanẓala did:

indeed, yes—how vile was what they plotted!

لا حِميَرِيٌّ وَفى وَلا عُدَسٌ

لا حِميَرِيٌّ وَفى وَلا عُدَسٌ

وَلا اِستُ عيرٍ يَحُكُّها الثَفَرُ

وَلا اِستُ عيرٍ يَحُكُّها الثَفَرُ

Neither Ḥimyarī nor ʿUdas kept faith,

nor an ass’s arse chafed by the crupper.

لَكِن عُوَيرٌ وَفى بِذِمَّتِهِ

لَكِن عُوَيرٌ وَفى بِذِمَّتِهِ

لا عُوَرٌ شانُهُ وَلا قِصَرُ

لا عُوَرٌ شانُهُ وَلا قِصَرُ

But ʿUwayr kept his pledge;

neither one-eyedness nor short stature marred him.
