الحَرْبُwar أَوَّلُat first ماwhen تكونُshe is فَتِيَّةًa young woman
تَسْعَىshe moves about بِزِيْنَتِهاwith her adornments لكلِّbefore every جَهُولِfool
At first, war is a young woman,
Parading her adornments before every fool.
حتىuntil إذاwhen اسْتَعَرَتْshe blazed وَشَبَّand flared up ضِرَامُهاher flames
عَادَتْshe became عَجُوزًاan old woman غيرَwithout ذاتِpossessing خَلِيلِa lover
But when she blazes and her flames flare up,
She becomes an old woman without a lover,
شَمْطَاءَgray-haired جَزَّتْshe shorn رَأْسَهَاher head وَتَنَكَّرَتْand her appearance changed
مَكْرُوهَةًrepellent لِلشَّمِّto smell والتَّقْبِيلِand to kiss
Gray-haired, her head shorn, her appearance changed,
Repellent to smell and to kiss.
