أَبَعْدَafter ...? زَيْدَانَZaydan أَمْسَىit became قَرْقَرًاa level plain جَلَدًاhard
أَبَعْدَ زَيْدَانَ أَمْسَى قَرْقَرًا جَلَدًا
وكانand it was مِنof جَنْدَلٍstone أَصَمَّsolid مَنْضُودَاlaid in courses
وكان مِن جَنْدَلٍ أَصَمَّ مَنْضُودَا
After Zaydan, has it become a hard, level plain,
After Zaydan the fortress became impregnable
though it was built of solid stone, laid in courses?
And was made of solid stone, completely deaf
لاnot يَسْمَعُhears القومُthe people فيهin it كُلَّall مَنْطِقِهِمْtheir speech
لا يَسْمَعُ القومُ فيه كُلَّ مَنْطِقِهِمْ
إلاexcept سِرَارًاin whispers تَخَالُyou would think الصَّوتَthe sound مَرْصُودَاunder watch
إلا سِرَارًا تَخَالُ الصَّوتَ مَرْصُودَا
The people within it hear nothing of their speech
The people could not hear any of their talking
except whispers—you would think the sound were under watch.
Except whispers, with voices restrained
قامتْshe rose رِقَاشِRiqash وأصحابيand my companions علىin عَجَلٍhaste
قامتْ رِقَاشِ وأصحابي على عَجَلٍ
تُبْدِيshe reveals لكto you النَّحْرَthe upper chest والَّلباتِand the throat hollows والجِيدَاand the neck
تُبْدِي لك النَّحْرَ والَّلباتِ والجِيدَا
Riqash rose while my companions were in haste,
My friends and I hastily got up
revealing to you her upper chest, throat hollows, and neck.
