أَراناI see us موضِعينَhastening لِأَمرِtoward a matter غَيبٍunseen
وَنُسحَرُand we are beguiled بِالطَعامِby food وَبِالشَرابِand by drink
I see us hastening toward an unseen fate,
and we are beguiled by food and drink.
عَصافيرٌsparrows وَذِبّانٌand flies وَدودٌand worms
وَأَجرَأُand bolder مِنthan مُجَلَّحَةِthe fiercest of الذِئابِwolves
Sparrows, flies, and worms are we,
yet bolder than the fiercest wolves.
فَبَعضَso less of اللومِthe blame عاذِلَتيmy reproaching lady فَإِنّيfor I
سَتَكفينيwill suffice me التَجارِبُexperiences وَاِنتِسابيand my ancestry
So lessen your blame, my reproaching lady, for
experience and my ancestry will suffice me.
إِلىto عِرقِthe root of الثَرىthe moist earth وَشَجَتbecame entwined عُروقيmy roots
وَهَذاand this المَوتُdeath يَسلِبُنيrobs me of شَبابيmy youth
My roots are entwined with the root of the moist earth,
and this death robs me of my youth.
وَنَفسيand my soul سَوفَwill يَسلِبُهاtake it away وَجِرميand my body
فَيُلحِقَنيso it will join me وَشيكاًsoon بِالتُرابِto the dust
And it will take my soul and my body,
then soon join me to the dust.
أَلَمhave I not أَنضِworn out المَطِيَّthe riding camels بِكُلِّacross every خَرقٍdesert waste
أَمَقِّvast in الطولِlength لَمّاعِshimmering with السَرابِmirage
Have I not worn out the riding camels across every desert waste,
vast in length and shimmering with mirage?
وَأَركَبُand I ride فيamid اللَهامِthe vast host المُجرِthe mighty حَتّىuntil
أَنالَI attain مَآكِلَthe spoils of القُحمِperilous ventures الرِغابِgreat
And I ride amid the vast, mighty host until
I gain the spoils of great, perilous ventures.
وَكُلُّand every مَكارِمِnoble quality of الأَخلاقِcharacter صارَتhas become
إِلَيهِtoward it هِمَّتيmy ambition وَبِهِand through it اِكتِسابيmy earning
And every noble trait has become
my ambition's aim, and through it comes my gain.
وَقَدand indeed طَوَّفتُI have roamed widely فيacross الآفاقِthe horizons حَتّىuntil
رَضيتُI was content مِنَof الغَنيمَةِthe spoils بِالإِيابِwith returning
And I have roamed across the horizons until
I was content with returning as my spoil.
أَبَعدَafter ...? الحارِثِal-Harith المَلِكِthe king اِبنِson of عَمروٍAmr
وَبَعدَand after الخَيرِthe noble حُجرٍHujr ذيlord of القِبابِthe domed tents
After al-Harith the king, son of Amr,
and after noble Hujr, lord of the domed tents,
أُرَجّيI hope for مِنfrom صُروفِthe vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime ليناًgentleness
وَلَمand have not تَغفَلbeen heedless عَنِof الصُمِّthe solid الهِضابِhills
can I hope for gentleness from the turns of time,
when they have not overlooked even the solid hills?
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّنيthat I عَمّاin just قَريبٍa short while
سَأَنشِبُI shall be caught فيin شَباthe sharp points of ظِفرٍa claw وَنابِand a fang
And I know that I, before long,
shall be caught on the sharp points of claw and fang,
كَماjust as لاقىmet أَبيmy father حُجرٌHujr وَجَدّيand my grandfather
وَلاnor أَنسىI forget قَتيلاًone slain بِالكِلابِat al-Kilab
as my father Hujr and my grandfather met their fate;
nor do I forget one slain at al-Kilab.
