طَبَّقَ الأَرضَ تُجَرّى وَتُدِر
A steady, pouring rain, thick with hanging cloud,
Rain clouds pouring, drenching the land
blanketing the earth, flowing and streaming.
Spreading over the earth, flowing and rolling

وَتُواريهِ إِذا ما تَشتَكِر
It reveals the mountain whenever it abates,
Bringing out the grass when it is revived
and conceals it whenever it pours heavily.
And covering it when it shrivels and folds

ثانِياً بُرثُنُهُ ما يَنعَفِر
And you see the lizard, nimble and deft at swimming,
You see the young gazelles nimble and adept
folding back its clawed paw, untouched by dust.
Their supple legs brisk, never tiring or weary

And you see the trees in its first rainfall,
And you see the trees in their lushness
like heads with veils torn around them.
Like cut-off heads around which turbans were tied

A while—then a downpour bore down upon it,
An hour it rains heavily upon them
drooping at the edges, rent open and pouring.
Falling in torrents, continuous and abundant

By afternoon the east wind milked it; then swept
Then the east wind passes blowing upon them
through it a bursting squall of the south wind.
Followed by a south wind, bursting and gusting

عَرضُ خَيمٍ فَخُفاءٍ فَيُسُر
It poured until its surging waves could not be contained
Swelling until, for one seeking shelter,
by the expanse of Khaym, then Khufāʾ, then Yusur.
The breadth of a tent is too narrow to house him

Already, at its onset, I was carried out in the morning
It has set out at dawn, carrying me in its nose,
by a steed lean in both flanks, firmly knit and sinewy.
Following behind the two encampments, woven and braided
