وكانَand it was سِفَاهًاfolly صَرْمُsevering ties ذيone possessing الوُدِّaffection والوَصْلِand closeness
You departed without satisfying your longing for Juml.
You left before finishing the farewell cup
And breaking with one so loving and close was folly.
Though parting was foolish for one so loving and close
وماand not ذاكthat مِنfrom صَرْمٍa severance بَدَاarose لِيin me ولاnor قِلًىaversion
ولكنْand yet مُلِمَّاتٌafflicting troubles عَرَضْنَarose مِنfrom الشُّغْلِpressing cares
That was not from a wish to sever ties that arose in me, nor from aversion,
It wasn't out of carelessness or disdain that you left
But from troubles that arose amid pressing cares,
But pressing affairs kept me from attending to you
وخَطْبٌand a calamity يُعَدِّيturns away ذاone possessing الهَوَىlove عنfrom صَدِيقِهِhis friend
وَيَمْنَعُand restrains مِنfrom بَعْضِsome الصَّبَابَةِardent longing ذاone possessing العَقْلِreason
And a calamity that turns a lover away from his friend
Matters distract the lover from his beloved
And restrains a man of reason from some of love's yearning.
And keep the wise from some youthful indulgences
وَرَكْبٍand a band of riders يُرِيدونَthey want الرُّقَادَsleep بَعَثْتُهُمْI roused them
علىon لاحِبٍa broad, clear track يَعْلُوrises over الأَحِزَّةِthe rugged ridges كالسَّحْلِlike white cloth
And a band of riders wanting sleep I roused
I sent off riders who sought rest
On a broad track rising over rugged ridges, like white cloth.
On a swift camel rising above the sand dunes
فَقَامُواthen they rose نَشَاوَىas though drunk يَلْمَسُونَthey grope for ثِيَابَهُمْtheir clothes
يَشِيمُونَthey watch أَبْرَاقَlightning flashes المَشَقَّةِhardship مِنfor أَجْلِيmy sake
Then they rose like drunkards, groping for their clothes,
They rose reluctantly, brushing off their clothes
Watching the lightning flashes of hardship for my sake.
Enduring hardship for my sake
وَقُمْتُand I rose إلىto حَرْفٍa lean, hardy she-camel كَأَنَّas though قُتُودَهاher saddle timbers

And I rose to a lean, hardy she-camel, as though her saddle timbers
I went to the edge of the well, its pulley wheels
Rested on a bull camel when the riding-camels' necks were worn thin.
Like the necks of stallions when the lead mare is in heat
شَدِيدَةِpowerful دَرْءِthrust المَنْكِبَينِboth shoulders جُلالَةٍmassive

Powerful in the thrust of her shoulders, massive,
Hard wheels to guide the bucket’s shoulders
Firmly joined at the flank, with broad hind legs.
Connected by strong ropes, platform straddling the pit
ومَاءٍand water كَلَونٍlike the color البَوْلِurine قَدْalready عَادَhad become آجِنًاfoul and stagnant

And at water the color of urine, already foul and stagnant,
The water was the color of stale urine
Where sounds were few, amid parched pasture,
Murky in the stone trough, echoes faint
لَقِيتُI met عليهbeside it الذِّئْبُthe wolf يَعْوِيhowling كأَنَّهُas though he were
خَلِيعٌan outcast خلاwas bereft مِنof كلِّall مَالٍwealth ومِنand of أَهْلِfamily
I met a wolf beside it, howling as though he were
There a wolf howled as if it were
An outcast, stripped of all wealth and of kin.
A wanton outcast, bereft of wealth and kin
فقلتُthen I said لهto him ياO ذِئْبُwolf هَلْwould لكfor you فيin أَخٍa brother
يُوَاسِيshares equally بلاwithout أُثْرَىself-preference عليكَover you ولاnor بُخْلِstinginess
Then I said to him, “O wolf, would you have a brother
I said: O wolf, would you accept a brother
Who shares without favoring himself over you or being stingy?”
To console you without obligation or stinginess?
فقالthen he said هَدَاكَmay He guide you اللهُGod إِنَّكindeed you إِنَّماonly
دَعَوتَyou invited لِمَاto what لَمْdid not يَأْتِهِdo it سَبْعٌa beast of prey قَبْلِيbefore me
He said, “May God guide you! You have only
It replied: May God guide you, you invite me
Invited me to what no beast of prey before me has ever done.
To what no wolf before me has ever known
فَلَسْتُso I am not بِآتِيهِone to do it ولاnor أَسْتَطِيعُهُI can do it
وَلاكِand yet اسْقِنِيgive me a drink إِنْif كانَis مَاؤُكyour water ذاhaving فَضْلِa surplus
So I will not do it, nor am I able to.
I cannot accept it nor do it
But give me a drink if you have water to spare.”
But let me drink if your water has some to spare
فَقَلْتُthen I said عليكَyou should go to الحوضَthe trough إِنِّيindeed I تَرَكْتُهُI left it
وفيand in صَفْوِهِits clear water فَضْلُthe remainder القَلُوصِthe young she-camel مِنfrom السَّجْلِthe bucketful
Then I said, “Go to the trough; I have left it,
I said: The trough is yours, I left it
And in its clear water remains what the young she-camel left from the bucketful.”
With remnants from the buckets and rope fibers
فَطَرَّبَthen he trilled his howl يَسْتَعْوِيsummoning with howls ذِئَابًاwolves كَثِيرَةًmany
وَعَدَّيْتُand I moved on كُلٌّeach مِنbecause of هَوَاهُhis desire علىengaged in شُغْلِa preoccupation
Then he trilled his howl, calling many wolves,
It howled joyfully, calling many wolves
And I moved on, each occupied with his own desire.
While I was preoccupied with my own affairs
