منwhoever تاهis haughty واحدةًonce فتهthen be haughty عشراten times
كيso that لاnot يجوزhe exceeds بنفسهin his own estimation القدراhis proper worth
Whoever is haughty once, be haughty ten times,
One who lost his way once, loses it ten times over,
so that he does not overestimate his own worth.
Lest he challenge fate on his own once more.
واذاand when زهاis haughty أحدsomeone عليكtoward you فكنthen be
أزهىhaughtier عليهtoward him ولاand do not تكنbe غمراnaïve
And when someone is haughty toward you, be
And if someone acts boastful towards you,
haughtier toward him, and do not be naïve.
Act more boastful, and don't sink into gloom.
أرأيتhave you considered? منsomeone لمdid not ترجyou hope for منفعةًa benefit
منهfrom him ولمand did not تحذرyou fear لهfrom him ضراharm
Consider someone you expect no benefit
Have you seen one from whom no benefit comes,
from, and from whom you fear no harm:
Nor harm to beware of, from him?
لمwhy? تستركyou are deemed weak وتستذلand you are humbled لهbefore him
بلrather كنbe أشدgreater اذاwhen زهاhe is haughty كبراin pride
why let yourself be deemed weak and humbled before him?
You neither shield him nor give in to him,
Rather, be even prouder when he grows haughty.
But be firmer if he acts boastful out of arrogance.
