What painful throbbing fills my heart
What torments my heart with painful throbs
when I see the lightning flash
When lightning's gleam I see
منfrom قبلthe direction of الأردنJordan أوor دمشقDamascus
من قبل الأردن أو دمشق
لأنbecause منthe one whom أهوىI love بذاكon that الأفقhorizon
لأن من أهوى بذاك الأفق
from the direction of Jordan or Damascus!
Before Jordan or Damascus
For the one I love is on that horizon.
For there my beloved parts from me
فارقتهI parted from him وهوand he is أعزdearest الخلقall creation
فارقته وهو أعز الخلق
عليto me والزورand falsehood خلافthe opposite of الحقtruth
علي والزور خلاف الحق
I parted from him, though he is the dearest of all creation
The dearest soul I ever met
to me—and falsehood is the opposite of truth.
Though, since we're sundered, he may yet forget
ذاكthat one الذيwho يملكowns منيof me رقيmy bondage
ذاك الذي يملك مني رقي
ولستand I do not أبغيI seek ماas long as حييتI live عتقيmy freedom
ولست أبغي ما حييت عتقي
He is the one who holds me in bondage,
The one who has my heart enslaved
and as long as I live, I do not seek my freedom.
