خَطَرتswept by بِالأَمسyesterday ريحٌa wind صَرصَرُbitter and howling
فَالتوىso it bent غُصنa bough شَبابيmy youth الأَخَضَرُgreen
Yesterday a bitter, howling wind swept by,
A wind rustled yesterday,
So the green bough of my youth bent.
So my green branch of youth bent.
وَرَأَيتand I saw الزَهرthe blossoms عَنهُfrom it يَنثرare scattered
مثلماjust as يَنثرare scattered دَمعيmy tears
And I saw the blossoms scattered from it,
I saw flowers shedding from it,
Just as my tears are scattered.
As my tears are shed.
ياO شَبابيmy youth أَنتَyou أَحرىmore deserving بِدَميof my blood
لاnot بِدَمعيof my tears أَوor شكاياتcomplaints فَميmy mouth
O my youth, you are more deserving of my blood,
My youth, you deserve my blood,
Not of my tears or the complaints of my mouth.
Not my tears or mouth's complaints.
خلّleave عَنيfrom me فَصحابيfor my companions لوّميmy reproachers
مَلأواthey filled بِاللومwith reproach سَمعيmy hearing
Leave me be, for my companions are my reproachers;
Leave me be, friends blame me,
They have filled my ears with reproach.
They filled my ears with blame.
سَئِمواthey wearied of نوحيmy lament وَعافواand they spurned منطقيmy speech
هُمthey ذووpossessors of أَفئدةhearts لَمhave not تَخفقthrobbed
They wearied of my lament and spurned my speech;
They grew weary of my wailing and shunned my speech,
They have hearts that have never throbbed.
They have hearts that did not flutter.
أَناI إِنif يَدرواthey knew بِحتفيwith my death ملتقِmeeting
وَغَداًand tomorrow يَهدأwill subside روعيmy dread
I—if they only knew—am to meet my death,
As for me, if they knew my demise was near,
And tomorrow my dread will subside.
Tomorrow my fears would subside.
وَطَأةُthe weight اللَيلthe night عَلىupon قَلبيmy heart الحَزينsorrowful
مَزَجتhas mingled مِنهُfrom it بِأَنفاسيwith my breaths أَنينa moan
The weight of night upon my sorrowful heart
The night's weight on my sad heart
Has mingled a moan from it with my breath.
Mixed sighs into my breaths.
ماnot لَهُfor it وَقعresonance بِسَمعin the hearing of العالمينthe world's people
وَبِسَمعيand in my hearing أَيwhat a وَقعresonance
It has no resonance in the ears of the world,
It has no impact on people's hearing,
Yet in my own ears, what resonance!
Nor does it impact my hearing.
أَنتyou ياO وَرقاءgray dove مِنfrom دونapart from الأَنامِall creatures
تَسمَعينyou hear النوحthe lament منيfrom me فيin الظَلامthe darkness
You, O gray dove, alone among all creatures,
You, O tender leaves, beyond people
Hear my lament in the darkness.
Hear my wailing in the darkness.
فَإِذاso when ماemphatic particle نَحتI lament ياO رَمزsymbol of السَلامpeace

So when I lament, O symbol of peace,
So if the symbol of peace sighs,
Answer my lament with cooing.
Respond to my wailing with rhyme.
