When we used to say, 'Fate has thwarted us,'

we found among our companions those who blamed us.

So they would say, 'Fear God and be content!

How often you have complained, full of greed, you wrongdoer!

Here is Nuzha, and you see her

every day—what could you be seeking?'

Woe to them! If they saw what fate had done,

they would say, 'Tormented and ill-fated!'

I had hoped that Nuzha might come to be

in a place where I had been living.

What I hoped for did not happen until I departed—

so who is the wrongdoer, and who the wronged?
