قدindeed شهدناwe have testified لعهدكمfor your rule بالعدالهْto justice
قد شهدنا لعهدكم بالعدالهْ
وختمناand we set our seal لجندكمfor your troops بالبسالَهْto valor
وختمنا لجندكم بالبسالَهْ
We have indeed attested to the justice of your rule,
We witnessed you uphold justice
and set our seal upon your troops' valor.
And crown your soldiers with valor
وعرفناand we have recognized بكمin you صديقاًa friend وفياًfaithful
وعرفنا بكم صديقاً وفياً
كيفhow ننسىwe forget انتداَبهhis mandate واحتلاَلهْand his occupation
كيف ننسى انتداَبه واحتلاَلهْ
And we have recognized in you a faithful friend—
We knew you as a loyal friend
how could we forget his mandate and his occupation?
How could we forget your occupation and annexation
وخجلناand we felt abashed منby لطفكمyour kindness يومthe day قلتمyou said
وخجلنا من لطفكم يوم قلتم
وعدthe promise بلفورBalfour نافذٌin force لاno مَحاَلهْescape
وعد بلفور نافذٌ لا مَحاَلهْ
And we were abashed by your kindness the day you said:
We were ashamed by your kindness when you said
"Balfour's promise shall be fulfilled, without fail."
The Balfour Declaration stands, inevitably
كلُّall أفضالكمyour favors علىupon الرأسthe head والعيand the eye (continued next line)
كلُّ أفضالكم على الرأس والعي
ن(completes 'eye') وليستand are not فيin حاجةneed لدلاَلهْof pointing out
ن وليست في حاجة لدلاَلهْ
All your favors are upon our head and eye,
All your favors are appreciated
and need no pointing out.
No need for further proof
ولئنand even if ساءَhas worsened حالُناour condition فكفاناthen it suffices us
ولئن ساءَ حالُنا فكفانا
أنكمthat you عندناamong us بأحسنin the best حالَهْcondition
أنكم عندنا بأحسن حالَهْ
And even if our lot has worsened, it is enough for us
Though our state is miserable
that you are among us in the best of circumstances.
You remain in our best graces
ولئنand even if ساءَhas worsened حالُناour condition فكفاناthen it suffices us
ولئن ساءَ حالُنا فكفانا
أنكمthat you عندناamong us بأحسنin the best حالَهْcondition
أنكم عندنا بأحسن حالَهْ
And even if our lot has worsened, it is enough for us
Though our state is miserable
that you are among us in the best of circumstances.
You remain in our best graces
غيرbut أنthat الطريقthe road طالتhas grown long عليناfor us
غير أن الطريق طالت علينا
وعليكمand for you فماso what لناhave we والاطالَهْand prolongation
وعليكم فما لنا والاطالَهْ
But the road has grown long for us
Except this road has been long for us
and for you; so why prolong it?
And for you, so we ask, why the procrastination?
أجلاءٌis it departure عنfrom البلادthe land تريدونyou desire
أجلاءٌ عن البلاد تريدون
فنجلوso we depart أمor مَحقْناour annihilation والإزالَهْand removal
فنجلو أم مَحقْنا والإزالَهْ
Is it departure from the land that you desire,
You want us out of this land
so we depart—or our annihilation and removal?
Shall we leave or face eradication and elimination?
