Shawqi says, unaware of my affliction:

“Rise for the teacher and pay him due reverence.”

Sit down—I would give my life for you! Can someone be revered

Who has been a close companion to little children?

And the Prince almost troubles me by saying:

“The teacher is almost a messenger.”

Had Shawqi tried teaching for an hour,

He would have spent his life in misery and listlessness.

Enough to fill the teacher with distress and gloom

Is the sight of notebooks, morning and evening.

A hundred upon a hundred—once they have been marked,

Blindness finds a path toward the eyes.

And if any benefit could be hoped for in the marking,

By your father, I would not be sparing with my eyes.

But I correct a grammatical error,

For instance, and take the Book as my guide,

Citing its radiant verses as evidence,

Or the Hadith, explaining it in full detail.

And I delve into ancient poetry, selecting

What is neither ambiguous nor commonplace.

And I almost resurrect Sibawayh from decay,

And his fellows from the earliest centuries.

Then, after all of that, I see a donkey

Who has put the genitive complement and the direct object in the nominative!

Do not be surprised if one day I let out a cry

And fall dead among the school benches.

O you who wish for suicide, I have found it:

Indeed, the teacher does not live long.
