Our free men, you have stripped your heroism

of its veil on the day the bail bonds were signed.

You are men of ornate speeches,

as we have learned, and heroes of protests.

And you have had your fill of appearing at a demonstration—

a lawful one—and grown drunk on the chants.

And had any of you been wounded by accident

there, you would then have reveled in the warm receptions.

Rather, God's wisdom lay in your safety,

because you are unworthy of martyrdom.

Palestine now cries out at you in fury:

"Clear the way, for you are not among my men!"

That prisoner who held his dignity dear—

all seekers of leadership are his ransom.
