O Ghamdan, what makes you weep, O Kaaba of guidance?

And why this sorrow, O temple of virtue and generosity?

I would excuse you if you alone were afflicted.

O Ghamdan, patience! You are not alone in this calamity.

Though Jabr has died, O Ghamdan, how vigorously

he prepared men for life and mustered them!

Do you weep for Jabr, with his troops around you?

Your consolation is in those who pass about you, evening and morning.

Your builder has a spirit that still sustains them,

and your shade stretches over time, forever.

And O whoever saw your lofty pillars upon the hills,

taking their place among the gardens of Lebanon!

You cherished the mother of languages and protected her,

and I was her impregnable, smooth-walled palace.

And Jabr was her faithful guardian and protector,

whenever an aggressor wronged her or attacked.

And institutes of learning were built in Lebanon,

but the hands of ignorance left not one institute among them.

And uglier than what they had perpetrated was their excuse:

they said, ‘Money is wasted in raising them, all in vain.’

    فَهَل ترَكوا مالاً هُناكَ فَينفدا

    And they claimed that they drained away vast sums of money;

but did they leave any money there to be exhausted?

Lamps—if they extinguished them, then these are

ill-omened fireflies: how often they led the rightly guided astray!

My regret is only for the hour in which

we believed the foes—may God not bless the foes!

How many a white hand of kindness the Arabs have shown them!

And who will find you a noble man who remembers a helping hand?

Though they have left Lebanon groping in the darkness,

    Ghamdan, O Lebanon, remains a pole-star.

The road to death, however long, death finds it

short; and however rugged, it finds it smooth.

And a man's death, when eighty years bend his back,

is like a beardless youth's death in the prime of life.

    تَحيط بِها شَتى ضُروب مِن الرَدى

    Your life, O human, has many forms;

many forms of death surround it.

And none has conquered mighty death but one

who leaves among people an undying remembrance,

leaving sweet remembrance—not like the man who died

and left a baleful promise in Palestine,

making a people weep and a nation laugh.

God willed nothing for it but homeless wandering.

But the best of people is one who keeps his harm

from others, or enriches life and brings happiness,

like Jabr and Abd Allah—may their earth be sweet,

and may it remain fragrant and fresh with dew.

Both were the best we could hope for,

in striving and giving joy, in private and in public.

And both were passionately in love with the Mudari tongue,

just as they devoted long years to her and gave themselves wholly.

How much of that beauty, folded away, they unfolded!

And how many marvels of that magic they renewed!

Her eloquence showed its artistry through Jabr, and preferred—

her pure speech—al-Bustan (the Garden) as shade and a spring.

When a language gains honor, even if its people are oppressed,

their independence is close to being firmly established.

Jabr has given me a helping hand that shines like the morning,

and my reciting an elegy for you is scant thanks for it.

I visited you in a house in Beirut devoted to generosity,

and to lofty literature, a courtyard and meeting place.

Joy surrounded your family on every side,

and passed to and fro across the features of their faces.

You discerned in me a glimmer from the flood of your light,

so you raised my standing, helping and guiding me.

You were indeed kind to me—O kindness of a father

who sensed good in his son and cared for him!

Alas, your favors now make me a mourner,

when once, in earlier days, they made me sing with joy.

I marvel at that resolve: the end

of your life was as full of it as its beginning.

So, O my language, glory in Jabr above all tongues,

and O my homeland, repeat the echo of his deeds.
