    The singing birds awakened me,

    Singing upon the treetops.

And the queen of lights revealed herself

    Above morning's throne, sipping dew

From the mouths of daisies, draught upon draught.

And I wished my soul's sister

Would join me at dawn to gather flowers.

I am in a garden that has offered its yield

To every sorrowful, lovelorn soul that came to it.

    Here is a rose whose fragrance wafts;

Here is a narcissus greeting the daisies,

And grapevines embrace the apple trees.

Hasten; together let us race for the spreading shade,

    And spend day after day.

The garden laughed when its springs overflowed,

And its jasmine flung itself upon the earth.

    فسَواءٌ هُيامُه وهُيامي

    Its willow grew lovesick, and its branches wailed;

Its lovesickness, then, is just like mine,

Except that I weep for my days.

Separation bereaved me of you as there flared

A fiery anguish within my ribs.

A year has passed as I conceal from people what I bear

    Of agonizing yearning and torment.

And indeed they ask why I am despondent.

Alas for them! How can they see my tears

Yet not understand what lies within my ribs?

And a lover may indeed conceal his love,

    Yet tears divulge the secrets.

Do you remember our days together, O pool,

When we were together and life was fresh and blooming,

And we would walk along your banks?

And you told our story in sorrowful strains,

And we made you promise not to betray us.

So repeat that story to me, for

Separation has left me too dazed to remember.

Do you remember, when the flowers were dewy,

How many necklaces we strung from them to grace the neck?

And when the east wind blew, it wafted perfume.

    And merriment ended, heralding parting,

So the necklace withered from the long embrace.

Its thread still gleams, while my body

    Fades from sight through sickness.

O daughter of the grove, sing or lament,

Perhaps your cooing will heal my wounds.

I can no longer bear being apart from my soul's sister.

So carry this message from me,

And, if you reach her, coo upon a bough.

For at dusk she listens to the birds,

Hoping they will return with news.

My sorrows bore me toward the sanctuary,

And I was awed by the majesty of the place.

And suddenly two hands were over my eyes.

    I felt freshness and bliss,

And recognized what I had kissed long ago.

I said, 'Welcome!' and kissed a hand

That received me as a guest in the most gracious home.

The breeze's gentle stirrings in your valley

Greeted me in the morning with a kiss from your lips,

Then returned with a kiss to heal you.

So peace to you, O Valley of Pomegranates!

From you I gained life's breath and sweet basil.

Oh, my yearning for your homes, where pomegranate trees

Stand near, shading the people of those homes!
