It flashed before him, sharpened and ablaze,

Sharper than allotted fate, and mightier.

It cut; the iron's cheek was not stained

With blood, nor was the slaughtered creature's throat stained.

And he ran, crying out, clapping awhile; neither

Did his gaze waver, nor did his footsteps stray.

Until doubt boiled within me, and I asked them:

Had the weapon failed, or was death lying?

They said, 'His soul's sweetness made him dance.'

So I answered them, 'Not every dance delights.'

Far from it! Look—he has died; yet there he is,

Stunned, darting now east, now west.

And there he is, swerving, his footsteps uneven,

And pure, unavenged blood streams down.

He runs; exhaustion drags at him, and he collapses,

And almost wins life, but it escapes.

    Gushing blood, writhing,

Clinging to his blood, springing up.

His torments are called 'his soul's sweetness.'

How often, in speech, truth is turned upside down!

Indeed, sweetness lies in a mouth smacking its lips,

Greedily, to drink what the victim pours out.

It is the joy of Eid, which was founded upon

Life's pain—and every Eid is happy!
