Do not say, “How splendid is lofty Lebanon!”

Do not say, “I long for the adversary’s melodies.”

Live as I wish you to be, blind and deaf.

O my heart, forget the days of love.

Have you seen the garden in the days of autumn,

its flowers withered, its rustling stripped away,

its beauty hidden in dense clouds?

O my heart, where are the days of love?

Have you seen the birds circling in the garden,

wandering, searching for the time of joy,

driven unwillingly onward as the wind rages?

O my heart, where are the days of love?

Do not ask me, O my heart, about happiness.

For you there is solace in the garden and in the birds.

Life is nothing but bliss and misery.

O my heart—and here love went astray.
