Love for you is a tyrant,

    Cruel to the heart.

    Mercy! Mercy!

    From the sigh of night

    And the anguish of day—

    Mercy!

O my hope, O light of my future,

Your silence has cast me into a quandary.

What has time hidden for me in your eyes?

Is there a smile in them, or tears

That melt my heart with grief within my ribs?

Oh, if only what they conceal would be revealed!

Suad, this heart finds no calm,

Nor will the eyelid taste the sweetness of sleep,

Unless you sincerely return my love, Suad.

If my lot with you were that you should know

What longing does to one in love,

Your heart would soften toward me, and tears would flow.

I saw a phantom in the depths of night,

Like a lightning flash, it streaked through the night.

Then it drew near, stunning me as it cried:

“Suad has given you no thought,

Nor were you the object of her hopes.”

Then it turned away, outrunning the storm wind.

Now no smile quenches my burning thirst,

Nor a bow of the head in greeting.

Better for us to confide love’s woes to each other.

Ah, how sweet a meeting at an appointed hour,

And how sweet the clasping of hands,

Till people say, “She is mad with love, and so is he!”

What has befallen the garden, that it withered,

And, alas, the branch, that it twisted?

And what mantle of spring has been folded away?

The garden, Suad, dictates its lessons

    In blossoms scattered like wishes.

O garden of beauty, beware of love!

Love for you is a tyrant,

    Cruel to the heart.

    Mercy! Mercy!

    From the sigh of night

    And the anguish of day—

    Mercy!
