It never crossed my mind, nor entered my reckoning,

that I would celebrate algebra and arithmetic—

two subjects that were my torment in youth.

Woe to them both! How often they strained my nerves

and left my heart in turmoil!

What are these letters and numbers?

What are these—sīn and ṣād—my brother?

And how, O delegations, O lands,

can like things and opposites come together,

    such as mathematics and literature?

O you who honor my cousin Qadri,

if I have fallen short, this is my excuse:

I would be faithless if I wooed him in verse.

So let our abundant thanks suffice for you,

O finest of friends and loved ones!
