    Beauty's paradise lies with her.

Its fragrance is reserved for her.

Its roses are in her cheeks.

    Drunk on her eyes.

She is the sweet basil of my heart.

If only she were near me.

My joy comes when I see her.

My paradise is the fire of loving her.

And my bliss lies in my misery.

I once had a season of love.

Many a bygone time cannot be brought back.

    Then cheek met cheek,

    And tears met honey.

My tears have dried, O days.

I can no longer bear the pain.

My joy comes when I see her.

My paradise is the fire of loving her.

And my bliss lies in my misery.

    A nightingale above the branches,

    An enchanter of many arts.

O you with the tender voice,

You do not know what my sorrows are.

    You amuse yourself and preen,

    And you see me roasting.

My joy comes when I see her.

My paradise is the fire of loving her.

And my bliss lies in my misery.

    The nightingale heard my lament,

As I wept for my days of merriment.

So the nightingale fluttered toward me,

    قلتُ يا بلبل دعني

    Calling, "Listen to my song."

    I said, "O nightingale, leave me;

Go back to the spreading trees and sing."

My joy comes when I see her.

My paradise is the fire of loving her.

And my bliss lies in my misery.

Lament with me, for lament is more fitting,

After the sweetest one I love has gone.

The heart rejoiced and grew weary.

    O nightingale, would you not

Fly back on your two wings

And return with the one I love?

And my bliss lies in my misery.

Love has worn away my youth.

It came to me through every door:

    From rejection to reproach,

    From torment to torment.

    All this is unbearable.

And still, parting is not sweet.

My joy comes when I see her.

My paradise is the fire of loving her.

And my bliss lies in my misery.

Some of us follow in the wake of others.

And youth is a day, and it passes.

If only it would pass and bring contentment.

O my heart, what use is my weeping?

Do you think my call will do any good?

My joy comes when I see her.

My paradise is the fire of loving her.

And my bliss lies in my misery.
