برَّحَtormented بيme الشوقُlonging فلماso when طغىexceeded bounds
فزعْتُI resorted للرْسمِto the portrait فكبَّرُتهُso I enlarged it
Longing tormented me, so when it exceeded all bounds,
Longing overwhelmed me, so when it overflowed
I turned to the portrait and enlarged it.
I turned to the portrait, magnifying it
وماand not شفىcured داءًan ailment ولكنَّماbut only
قلبيmy heart شكاcomplained of البعدَseparation فعلَّلُتُهُso I consoled it
And it cured no ailment; it was only that
It cured no illness, but rather
my heart complained of separation, so I consoled it.
My heart complained of distance, so I justified it
ولمand did not أجدْI find فيin الرَّسمِthe portrait أخلاَقهاher character
جرَّبتُهاI tested her حيناًfor a while وجرّبتُهand I tested it
And I did not find her character in the portrait;
And in the portrait I found none of her traits
I had tested her for a while, and tested it.
I tried it for a while and tried it again
منتظريwaiting for me فيin غرفتيmy room دهرَهُits whole lifetime
جودُgenerosity بخيلٍa miser ماnot تعوَّدْتُهI was accustomed to it
It waits for me in my room its whole life—
Waiting for her in my room for ages
a miser's generosity I was not used to.
The generosity of a miser that I'm not used to
ظلَّremained وقدand indeed ناجيتُهُI confided in it باسماًsmiling
ولمand did not يمانعْobject حينwhen قبَّلتُهI kissed it
It kept smiling as I confided in it,
It remained while I whispered to it by name
and did not object when I kissed it.
And didn't object when I kissed it
عَرَفْتُI acknowledged للرَّسامto the painter إبْداَعهُhis artistry
وعدتُand I returned للرَّسمِto the portrait فانكرتُهso I rejected it
I acknowledged the painter's artistry,
I recognized the painter's skill
and returned to the portrait, then rejected it.
And returned to the portrait, rejecting it
قدindeed فاتهit lacked دَلٌّa coy charm تعرَّفْتُهُI came to know it
فيهاin her ومَطْلٌand stalling كمhow often تذوَّقتُهI tasted it
It lacked a coy charm I had come to know
It lacked a glance I knew
in her, and the stalling I had tasted so often.
In her, and a smile whose taste I savored
لَوْif جاءَنيhe came to me الرسَّامُthe painter بالمشتهىwith what was desired
كفرتُI disbelieved باللهِin God وأشركتُهُand I made him God's partner
Had the painter brought me what I desired,
If the painter brought me the desired one
I would have disbelieved in God and made him God's partner.
I would reject God and associate him
