You surpassed Abarwiz in pride and might,
You have gained glory and might from the Abrauis,
And through Shapur, a proud distinction was ascribed to you.
And Sapur made you glorious and mighty,

Time forcibly stripped you of your kingdom's crown.
Time adorned you with the crown of your kingship and might,
Do not falter: kings are those who prevail and seize.
Do not despair, for kings are made mighty by might,

What Khaqan of the Sassanid seat,
Was ever ascribed except to one like you?
Was made mighty except by the likes of you?

You are nearer to that pattern and worthier of it,
You are the closest to excellence and the first,
Moreover, more pleasing to it, and finer in style.
Then the sweetest to it and the best endowed.

Fresh roses are gathered from your virtues
The roses cull their blossoms from your traits,
Whenever glory gives your side a shake.
Whenever glory shakes your side it trembles.

صعدة لا تلين بالكف غمزا
We have brandished you in wars as a spear,
We have shaken you in wars as a sturdy spear
A straight shaft that will not bend beneath the palm's pressure.
That does not soften when tapped by the palm.

مرهفا يهتك الضريبة حزا
And we have unsheathed you against calamities as a sword,
And we have forged you for perils as a sharp sword,
Keen-edged, rending its target with a slash.
That rends the armor and cuts it open.

So, with the sword's edge, slashing and hewing,
With the edge of the sword we charged and in the open,
And with the spear's point, stabbing and piercing.
And with the chest of the spear we stabbed and thrusted.

You have drunk of affairs, sweet and turbid,
You have drunk matters fresh and delicate,
And grazed on the ages, sweet or tart.
And shepherded the ages pleasant or bitter.

At times you go forth, stitching up a rent,
At times you may go to mend a rupture,
And at others return, ripping open a seam.
And at others return to rupture what was mended.

Concealing in your conscience a hidden symbol,
Then you spared no effort to uncover that symbol.
Then you do not cease to reveal the symbol.

I was asked today, "Who is called Abu al-Fadl?"
I was told today "the one called Abu al-Fadl,"
I said, "May her mother be dazzled! Abu al-Fadl Mirza."
I said "By his mother Abu al-Fadl is a symbol."

O Abu al-Fadl, in byname—indeed, in name as well—
O Abu al-Fadl, not just a nickname but a name too,
Excellence has refused any name but yours as its refuge.
None but your name has made Excellence a symbol.

So remain a helper to whoever calls on you for help,
So remain a helper for one who calls you for help,
Nay, also a treasure to whoever comes to you for treasure.
And even a treasure for one who comes to you for treasure.
