يقولونthey say منof نارfire تكوّنwas formed خدهhis cheek
عجيبstrange وماءand the water of الحسنbeauty فيin الخدthe cheek سلسالsweet and clear
They say his cheek was formed of fire.
They say his cheek was formed from fire
How strange, when beauty's water in the cheek is sweet and clear!
How strange, and beauty's water flows down his cheek
اجلyes هوit منof ماءwater ونارand fire تألفاthe two joined together
وقدand indeed قيلit was said منof ماءwater فياso, oh! بعدremoteness from truth ماwhat قالواthey said
Yes, it is of water and fire, the two joined together.
Yes, he was made of water and fire combined
And it has been said to be of water—how far-fetched their words!
Yet it was said he's of water, after what they told
فلوfor if كانit were منof نارfire لماit would not have اخضرّgrown green روضهits garden
وباتand spent the night بأيديwith the hands of الشوقlonging تجنيهplucking it آمالhopes
For were it made of fire, its garden would not have grown green,
If he were of fire his garden wouldn't have flourished
nor would hopes have spent the night plucking it with longing's hands.
Nor would hopes have picked him with hands of longing
ولاand not هوit منof ماءwater وإنand even though سالit flowed رقةtenderness
ولوand if كانit were منof ماءwater لماit would not have احترقburned الخالthe mole
Nor is it made of water, though it flows with tenderness;
He's not of water, though tenderness flows
and were it made of water, the mole would not have burned.
If he were of water, passion wouldn't have burned the cheek
