Rise and give me drink, O enchantment of the age,

tawny wine that breaks sorrow’s sting.

O one who pours it as wine from his two eyes,

    blended with kohl and drowsiness.

If you are absent from my night and my late-night talk,

still you are surely in my private and my public life.

O one who teaches the Khatti spear its swaying,

when he sways his figure like a Yazani spear.

A moon appeared, borne along by a bough:

O, who has seen a moon upon a bough?

I have but one rule concerning you,

yet I see you have judged me by many rules.

So keep a tormented soul alive for me,

for you are surely that soul within the body.

    ارخصتني يا غاليَ الثمن

    I am a pearl for which merchants bid high;

you have cheapened me, O you of high price.

My heart is held in pledge with you today:

O, who will aid a heart pledged to you?

O my leader, whom I willingly follow without a halter,

what harm would it do if you freed me from my halter?

An archer shot me while he was behind shields,

until my own shields struck my vital spots.

Never have my eyes seen, nor have

my ears heard, anyone cleverer than him in all time.
