Oh, may al-Jarʿāʾ, Nawār’s dwelling-place, be watered
O water-bearer of the radiant quarter
by a fringed rain-cloud with pouring showers.
Dispensing rain at the station of the train

فيهin it ماemphatic particle بينamong العذارىthe maidens منof عذارِa bridle
A haunt of revelry—how often, for love, we cast off
A quarter of joy, how much joy we shed there
a bridle there amid the maidens!
Where the virgins’ coquetry abounded

بالحمىin the sanctuary ماemphatic particle بينamong هاتيكthose الديارِthe dwellings
How lovely the days of companionship that passed in the sanctuary,
Blessed were those days of past companionship
in the sanctuary, amid those dwellings!
In the fever, between these houses

Where a slender-waisted youth had made the rounds among us
When a lively one circulated among us
with goblets descending like brilliant stars.
With cups that swayed like rivulets

So we turned to sip the wine of dusky lips,
And we inclined to sip the wine of gatherings
from the heady warmth of his mouth, not from wine.
From the heat of his mouth, not from medicine

In gardens whose reaches were perfumed
In gardens whose corners were scented
by a waft of wormwood and the breaths of bahār blossoms.
By the fragrance of lavender and roses’ breath

Whenever a north wind blew over us,
Whenever a north wind blew upon us
the fragrance of ʿarār blossoms wafted from its direction.
It blew from itself the spreading of aromas

Many a night I spent watching its star,
Many a night I stayed up, sleepless
sleepless, until the light of day appeared.
Restless, until the light of dawn appeared

The memory of a visitor in the sanctuary stirred me,
The memory of a visit in the fever stirred me
who appeared to me late at night, though the meeting-place was far away.
Pity me from afar at the tomb

If another would argue, then I
If another contends with me in love
am not among those who argue about loving graceful maidens.
I am not one who contends in love of the beautiful
