ياO قمرmoon الأرضthe earth أينwhere تغدوyou go at dawn
قصدكyour destination نجدٌNajd وأينand where نجدُNajd
O moon of the earth, where do you go at dawn?
O moon of the earth, where are you heading
Your destination is Najd—but where is Najd?
Is it towards Najd, and where is Najd
قصدكyour aim تنحوyou head toward السماءthe sky لاno بلrather
سماوةheaven الحسنbeauty منكfrom you قصدُa goal
You aim to seek the sky—no, rather,
Your destination is the sky, no, but
The heaven of beauty is your goal.
The heavenliness of your beauty is the destination
الستdo you not تَدريknow وأنتand you أدرىknow better
سماوتاناour two heavens فمٌa mouth وخدُّand a cheek
Do you not know—and you know better—
Don't you know, and you know best
Our two heavens are a mouth and a cheek?
Our heaven is a mouth and a cheek
وَماand what عليناupon us إِذاif ظمئناwe thirst
وليسand there is no إلاexcept لماكyour lips' dusky hue وِردُa watering place
And what blame falls on us if we thirst,
What can we do if we get thirsty
When your dusky lips are the only watering place?
And there is nothing but your drink to quench it
ثغركyour mouth برقlightning والدمعand tears غيثrain
وليسand there is no إلاexcept الحنينlonging رعدُthunder
Your mouth is lightning, and tears are rain;
Your lips shine like lightning and tears like rain
And thunder is nothing but longing.
And nothing but longing is the thunder
والقدُّand the figure لدنٌpliant وفيهand in it لينٌsoftness
يكادit almost منfrom لينهits softness يقدُّis rent
And your figure is pliant and full of softness;
Your stature is tender with softness
It is almost rent by its own softness.
As if from its softness it may melt

وللمطاياand the riding camels had نصٌّa swift pace ووخدُand a long-striding gait
And when your departure began in earnest,
And when the journey was difficult upon you
And the riding camels sped with long, swift strides,
The camels had some vigor and pillow
أوسعتُI flooded أرضthe land الفلاthe desert دموعاًwith tears
يضيقgrows too narrow منهاfor them حزنrugged high ground ووهدُand low ground
I drenched the desert's earth with tears;
I shed tears in the vast desert
Rugged heights and hollows could not contain them.
Sorrow and depression fill the valley
أردُّI restrain دَمعيmy tears والدَمعand the tears يأبىrefuse
كأنَّas though دمعيmy tears خصمٌan adversary الدُّobstinately contentious
I restrain my tears, but the tears refuse,
I want to hold back my tears but they refuse
As though my tears were an implacable foe.
As if my tears argue against staying
آليتI vowed لمdid not أألI spare فيكfor you جهداany effort
وغايةand the end المستهامthe love-stricken جهدُhardship
I vowed, and spared no effort for you;
I did not make any effort to change you
And the end of the love-stricken is hardship.
The utmost endeavor is effort
حملتyou burdened قلبيmy heart ماwhat ليسis not يقوىstrong enough

You burdened my heart with what cannot be borne
I carried in my heart more than
By a stouthearted man—yet you are stouthearted.
Skin can bear, yet you are endurance

If you are one while people are a multitude,
If you are alone while people are a group
The full moon of all humankind is unique.
You are the full moon among people

ياO سعدSa'd قربnearness الحبيبthe beloved سعدُbliss
Happiest is a day that brings a meeting with you;
The day I meet you is a blessed day
O Sa'd, nearness to the beloved is bliss.
The nearness of the beloved is blessing
قدindeed حالhas intervened دونbefore الوصالunion هجرٌestrangement
وحالand intervened دونَbefore الدنوnearness بعدُdistance
Estrangement has barred the way to union,
Separation prevented the union
And distance has barred the way to nearness.
And distance prevented being neighbors

والبينand parting يدعوcalls والعيسand the pale camels تحدوurge onward
The camel-driver raised his call among you;
The voice of the camel driver calls you
And parting calls, and the pale camels urge us onward.
While distance invites and the night winds blow
وربand many a ليلnight بهin it انتظمناwe were strung together
كأنناas though we فيat طلاهits throat عقدa necklace
And many a night we were strung together,
And a night in which we gathered
As though we were a necklace at its throat.
As if we are pearls in a necklace

والعيشand life حلوsweet المذاقto the taste رغدُfull of ease
Within it we unfolded playful conversation,
Shaking off in it playful chat
And life was sweet to taste and full of ease.
And living so sweet and comfortable

يضمُّناenfolds us للعفافfor chastity بردُa cloak
There we entwined, flank against flank;
In it we huddled like partridges
A cloak held us close for chastity's sake.
Modesty covers us with a cloak
