امطremove ليfor me زفرةa sigh القلبof the heart الرميضfevered
O breeze of the ban trees in the luxuriant garden,
The breeze of evening in the soft meadow,
Relieve me of the fevered heart's sigh.
Wipe for me the sigh of my burning heart,
لعلكperhaps you سابرprobing بحشايwithin my breast جرحاa wound
امضّhow agonizing بسائرall of الجرحthe hurt المضيضaching
Perhaps you may probe a wound within my breast—
Perhaps you will pass by my wounded love,
How agonizing is all the aching hurt!
Proceed with the rest of my painful wound.

فترعفand bleeds مقلتيmy eye بدمwith blood غريضfresh
I wish to milk the eyelids for tears,
I want to shed tears from my eyelids,
Yet my eye bleeds fresh blood.
So my lashes will flow with hot blood.
تقولsay ليto me الغروبthe tear-streams دئبتyou have persisted فيضاin overflowing
فقلتso I said لهاto them ودأبكand your habit انto تفيضيyou overflow
The tear-streams tell me, 'You have poured unceasingly';
The sunset said to me, it overflowed,
So I told them, 'And overflowing is your wont.'
So I said to it, your habit is to overflow.
كذاthus ابقىI remain سدىًforsaken بيدin the hand of اللياليthe nights
فلاso not اناI بالصحيحin good health ولاnor المريضill
Thus I remain forsaken in the hands of the nights,
Thus I remain in vain at the hands of nights,
So I am neither healthy nor ill.
Neither healthy, nor sick.

I raise one eye and lower the other;
Raise an eyelash, and lower another,
It takes aim at one humble and downcast-eyed.
Aim the shy, hurting glance.

For some deem human blood lawful,
Some allow shedding the blood of innocents,
Yet claim that mosquito blood is forbidden.
Yet claim it’s unlawful to shed a gnat's blood.
تنكرturned hostile ليto me الزمانtime لطولfor the length of باعيmy arm-span
وفضليand my merit فيهin it والجاهand prestige العريضfar-reaching
Time turned against me for my long reach,
Time denies me for my long life,
And my merit in it, and my far-reaching prestige.
And my virtues in it and broad glory.

So it drove its fang into the veins of my flesh,
So direct its fang to the flesh of my veins,
And hurried through it to the broken bone.
And hasten in it to my aching bone.

فهلthen, will...? يقضيperform صلاتيmy prayer اوor فروضيmy obligatory duties
It keeps me hoping, to pay me my gifts;
It makes excuses to bid my prayers farewell,
But will it perform my prayer or my obligatory duties?
Does it bid my prayers farewell or my obligations?

It cheers me when my verse grows angry,
It delights me when my poetry gets angry,
And what delights me in it is matched by what vexes me.
And its delight in it hurts me.

And my literary art flies to the Pleiades,
I have manners that fly to the Pleiades,
While my fortune lies in the dust of the depths.
And a fortune fallen in the mud.

To you I look amid the battleground of rhymes;
Look into the struggle of rhymes,
You will find my heart [hewn] from verse.
You’ll find my heart burnt from poetry.

If the sea of meter roars or rages,

I swim in the sea of prosody.

When the hand of days casts down my burden,
When the hands of days cast off my burden,
Then do not feel safe from my leap or my rising.
Do not feel safe, neither my dress nor my standing up.

I shall act, or make terms with them, and be content
I will create, or make it create, and be content,
With the black and the white among their deeds.
With the blacks of its making, and the whites.
