My woe for you is truly a woe that never ends.

O you who descended into the earth's pits, though they cannot contain you.

You were indeed my companion, for you never lost heart

when anguish assailed the steadfast man's breast.

Can a fair countenance make up for Hasan,

or a heart of gold that no rust has marred?

O you absent from eyes still watching for you,

awaiting an hour when a glimpse of you returns to them.

What, then, can ease the ways of death for us?

Indeed, all humankind are equal before death.

My beloved friends, if frailty has carried you off today,

let it suffice us: tomorrow frailty will carry us off.

If my heart has come to be broken

over you, it is for brothers who have been cut off.

How enamored death was of the companions who grazed

in it so eagerly, as though death were a pasture!

It called them, and they answered it, bound for its destination,

    unresisting, neither stumbling nor limping.

No rugged side of theirs grew soft before death,

though death makes even the dauntless lion tremble.

Not a muscle of theirs quivered, though they saw

the birds of doom alighting upon their souls.

I sent half my soul after them, convinced

that soon I shall join them, following in their wake.
