My two friends, the heart has indeed returned to consolation.
My beloved, my heart has returned to serenity
And since you came to be, love's easiest part has been affliction.
Since I loved you, sorrows have been made easy

My face shows you contentment, while my heart is angry;
You see pleasure on my face and anger in my heart
It has borne on your account what Mount Raḍwā cannot bear.
Bearing what cannot be borne even by the content

I think that, when you had tested my legs,
I think that when you tested my loyalty
You took me for a spent camel and burdened me with hardship.
You thought me tranquil, so you burdened me with tribulation
وهبنيَand suppose me نضواًa spent camel دأبهits habit السَّيرtravel والسرىand night travel

And grant that I am a spent camel, accustomed to travel by day and night:
Grant me tranquility, accustomed to travel and journeying
So it is no wonder that a spent camel knelt in a trackless desert.
No wonder a tranquil one endures with constant sorrow

I see you turning away, so I turn away, averting my face,
I see you turn away, so I pardon, reluctant
Though once I had a heart unable to turn away.
My heart was too weak for pardoning

I forgo seeking amends, though inwardly reproachful,
Reproach me for complaining, yet blame inside
And seeking amends may bring on what breeds enmity.
Complaints call for reproach and enmity

It is not seemly that I complain when you are my grievance;
How can I complain when you are my lament?
Were you to listen to me, I would tell you my complaint.
Had you listened, I'd have told you my woes

And you are the one whose heart love has permeated;
You, whom love has touched at heart
So how would you have been, then, had you not loved?
How could I not love were you not impassioned?

God be with you! How often I fold away and unfold a burning pang;
God, how I conceal and unfold anguish
So within the heart it never ceases to be unfolded or folded away.
Ever unfolding and folding within my heart

Repeller of the lowly, garden of refuge

Surely it is enough for you to know my secret and my whispers,
My secret and intimacies are enough for you to know
And my Lord suffices me, the Knower of secrets and whispers.
And my Lord knows all secrets and intimacies

Justice forbids you to condemn one of Luʾayy ibn Ghālib's line—
My father rules justly over Lu'ay son of Ghalib
A youth who has reached the furthest limit in his love.
A youth who has attained the limits of passion

Days passed with you, serene for me at al-Ṣafā,
Days have passed that were honest to me about you
And nights passed, grown sweet with you at al-Marwā.
Nights went by when you visited me in dreams

So curb my desire for a love of yours that lies
Toward one sincere in his affection—a dusky gazelle fawn.
To one truthful in his affection, gentle and serene

And how many a companion has turned from an unjust companion!
How many friends ask about a cruel beloved
