فلمyet did not يغمزنthey bend ليof mine عوداًa wooden stem صليباsturdy
فلم يغمزن لي عوداً صليبا
My fortitude has weakened; I have wrestled with calamities,
She is my skin, and yet she has never rested from sorrow,
yet they never bent my sturdy stem.
No happiness has she brought to me, only misery,

لئن أورثنني شجنا طويلا

فما قصرن لي باعاً رحيبا
Even if they left me with lasting grief,
If she has bequeathed me prolonged sadness,
they never shortened my ample reach.
She has not granted me a spacious respite,

جوى أورى الفؤاد به لهيبا
My weary mount wept and, pitying me, stirred
Nadwa wept, stirring my compassion,
a burning anguish that kindled a blaze in my heart.
The heart was aflame with passion for her,

وكنت أظنه نضواً طروبا
I marveled that it moaned from passion and longing,
I wondered at her coyness and longing,
though I had thought it a weary, merry mount.
I thought it was joyful flirtation,

Its bellowing reminds me of the call of a gazelle
Her voice reminds me of a young gazelle,
whose mellow, nasal voice has stolen hearts.
Captivating the hearts with her beautiful singing,

When the moist breeze stirs at night,
When the moist breeze blows gently by her,
he bends his side like a tender bough.
She sways a delicate branch gracefully,

He shows you a rising moon in his face;
You’d think her face was the rising moon,
when you deem him miserly, he clothes himself in its setting.
When she frowns her face darkens like the sunset,

How many a pampered fawn I have beheld,
How many times I have inhaled the fragrance of her down,
yet never have I seen a pampered fawn like him.
Never have I smelled a fragrance so sweet,

When her black tresses cascade down,
scorpions slowly over his cheek.
Scorpions crawl above her alluring eyebrows,

I smell no perfume from Darin
From neither of our homes comes a sweet scent,
when I inhale the fragrance of his temples.
Unless I breathe in the perfume of her cheek,

My heart loves you, gazelle of the valley bend,
My anxious heart loves you, young gazelle,
and frets in fear that you may grow suspicious.
Fearing lest you shy away and flee,

Grant you have a home at al-Liwa; I
I have cast off the cloak of my patience for you,
see a fertile pasture for you within my breast.
And sadness has clothed me in a coarse garment,

I wish I could kiss your neck,
and sip from a cool, sweet mouth with pearly teeth.
And quench my thirst from your white slender waist,

By your life, none has savored life except
None can enjoy life, except the lover,
a lover who spends the night embracing his beloved.
Who embraces his beloved at night,

I obeyed the lovers by loving a beloved,
I obeyed the lovers by loving my darling,
and for his sake defied the reproacher and the watcher.
And disobeyed the blamer and the watcher,

When I seek his tenderness, he reddens with rage,
When I implore her, she blushes with anger,
and heeds neither my yellowed face nor my pallor.
Not noticing my pallor and leanness,

He stripped the cloak of my patience from my shoulders,
She removed the cloak of my patience from my shoulders,
so sorrow clothed me in a fresh new mantle.
And clothed me in the garb of deep sorrow,

One who hides his love fearing harm,
because of it reveal my yearning and my sobs.
I show him my weeping and lament,

And because I failed to attain union with her,
and found no share in his affection,
And saw no share of her affection,

I went saying, while my eyelids shed tears,
blood in torrents, like a morning rain-cloud:
Like a shy maiden, blood flowing from her wounds,

Abbas kindles a fire within my breast,
In the wild, the blazing fire of passion burns within me,
from which my heart almost melts.
My heart is melting from its ferocious heat,

People see him all smiles—why, then,
People see her as happy and smiling,
do I see him frowning and scowling at me?
While to me she is aloof and remote.
