If I betray a pledge or break a bond of affection,
If I broke a pact or severed a bond
may my hand never bear sword-blades or spears.
I did not bear aloft prey or plunder

O youth of the errant king, it is enough for me to see
A king's worthless son, it suffices me to see
guidance through you as error, and misguidance as right guidance.
The gift guide you and misguidance lead aright

If you wish, you guide the youth to his death
strut, O bough of the sandhill, and sway gracefully.
Imagine him, a tender branch swaying gently

Making the thorns its pillow and mattress?
