I sent you letters borne by sighs,
I sent you messages with my sighs
and by tears, their spouts pouring in a stream.
And with my tears an abundant spring imploring

O our beloveds, the tears that flowed
Oh beloveds, indeed the tears that flowed
flowed as messengers and letters between us.
Were messengers between us and missives

لقد عركت مني جرانا وكاهلا
By separation's life, its night-visiting affliction did not know
By the life of my desire, the knocking of passion didn’t know
how thoroughly it had battered my throat and shoulders,
That it had rubbed my sides and shoulders raw

that evening I bade farewell to cheeks like silver mirrors,
One evening I bade farewell to my cheeks and tresses
traveling by night on pale camels, their slender figures drooping.
Gliding over the staff, my knots undone

It was as though a gazelle with neck outstretched had escaped me,
As if an untamed gazelle had escaped me
long-necked; and I bade farewell to the flirtatious gazelle.
Yearning, bidding farewell to the flirting gazelle

And a gazelle's son exchanged furtive glances with me,
And the sly glance stole me, son of a flirt
wily, grazing and roaming amid the thicket.
Grazing negligently amidst the meadow

And a startled one brought me swift, terrible death,
And death brought me its fearful, horrifying decrees
with soft shanks that filled the anklets.
With a procession of favors that filled the anklets

While I had given my obedience to the maidens
and grown so love-distraught that I came to love the reproachers.
And became bewildered until I loved the maidens

My friends, the heart cannot be safe

For you I have no tranquility until I reach ruin

Though I did not use to weep for the abodes, their halting places

had truly crossed stages toward you for their sake.
I have a right to them that I've apportioned to you

Whenever turmoil incites it to blaze

So from a sigh in my chest dancing frantically
and a tear upon the cheek shakes loose a downpour.
And from a teardrop on my cheek shedding its showers

For there is a haven for the guide I knew
in its courtyard the angels laid down their breasts.
