purebred Arab steeds against the sons of the covenant-breaking woman.

How long, when no resolve has yet roused you

to make rugged ground bear stride upon stride?

And how long, while the heart of faith burns with thirst,

will you veil the Indian sword's nose with refusal?

You have prolonged your absence while the enemy lies in wait,

unsheathing swords while your sword remains in its scabbard.

where fierce warriors crouch and heads go bounding?

your flesh, tearing it with its worn-down fangs.

And how often a short hand has been stretched against you

by riffraff whose hands had always been held in check.

And they bore down on you with spearheads, forcing

your noses into the dust, deliberately affronting the faith.

How, then, when you are like ravening lions,

can they drive you off as stranger camels are chased away?

So rise against them, springing with a resolve

that, in your fury, cuts apart the rings of mail,

and with quivering brown spears and white, keen-cutting blades,

and beardless youths, and a massed troop of sleek-coated steeds.

And lead the saddled steeds into it—you would think them,

when they surge forth in their bridles, the crashing of thunder.

strutting on the morning of terror, his cloak trailing.

turning back the horses' breasts with his powerful steed.

And a fair, bright-browed man, baring

the forearm of resolve amid black clouds of dust.

It found among them no yielding hand,

nor a coward's heart, nor an ineffectual lance.

Valiant raiders whose strength no charge could sap,

on a field of encounter where they gave their utmost.

The clash of blades did not frighten them, nor did they turn

back from the path of right for fear of death.

They embraced the spearheads as though

embracing the slender-waisted gazelles of Najd.

in which even the brave, intrepid warrior strayed from his course.

by Banu al-Zarqa' with inflamed eyes.

if fierce warriors did not recognize it, its cleaving made it known.

where horses trampled, their saddle-felts crimson.

Until they fell like stars setting,

in a kindled, thirsting battle, searing with flame.

Each of them was succor for one crying out,

relief for the anguished, and rain for the beggar.

bereaved with grief, neither repeating a word nor beginning one.
