أخي دون إخوان الصفا وعقيدي

Hamid, is there anyone like Hamid in this world?

My brother, unmatched among companions of purity and faith,

جديد أخاء كالقديم صحبته

حبيبا وكم من لذَّة لجديد

His new brotherhood is like the old, his companionship

A beloved, and how much pleasure there is in the new!

أكاد إذا ما عنَّ بالورد ذكره

أغصُّ مِنَ الماء الروا بورودي

When his name is mentioned with roses, I almost

Choke on the watered wine in my glass.

أقوم على شوق واقعد عن جوىً

ففيه قيامي في الهوى وقعودي

I stand up longing, and sit down burning with love,

So in this love my standing and sitting are one.

فيا جنتي للنائبات عددتها

ويا عدتي أسطو بها وعديدي

O my paradise counted out for misfortunes,

O my supplies, my armoury and stock,

وياجنة الخلد التي وعدوا بها

كأني منها فائز بخلود

O paradise of eternity promised us,

I am as if I already possess its eternity.

ولولا ذهاب القلب عبَّ بوردكم

وسار على الأعياء سير بريد

Had my heart not gone travelling to see you

And journeyed tiredly like a courier,

تذكرت بغدادا فيا جادها الحيا

فقلت لعيني بالمدامع جودي

I would have remembered Baghdad, o its lost life,

And said to my eyes, “Spare your tears!”

وسددت لي سهماً على البعد صائبا

وما كل سهم نافذ بسديد

I shot a well-aimed arrow into the distance,

Though not every arrow finds its mark.

أردتَ به أما الوريد أو الحشا

فلم تألُ إذ أثبتَّهُ بوريدي

Did you mean for the vein or the heart?

You did not miss, fixing it in my core.

عسى اللَه أن يرتاح في جمع شملنا

ويعقب وصلاً بعد طول صدود

May God grant that we are brought together again

And follow estrangement with reunion.
