Halt, you two, at al-Waʿsā; let us greet the valley bends,
When we pass by the valley of Al-Wae'sa, we greet its meadows,
and shed streaming tears at the mountain's foot.
And spill tears like maidens on its slopes,

Let us spread a greeting through those bends,
And spread greetings in those meadows,
and enfold anguish within our curving ribs.
With ribs exposed to affliction.

Let us halt the swift white camels while
We stop the companions until we can see,
we gaze in the lowlands at gazelles reaching up to browse.
The shy gazelles in the valley wander.

When the tipsy drinker sings of them,
When the drinker sings his praises,
he forgets his cup and turns to sipping songs.
His cup overflows and he joyfully sings.

My time at al-ʿUdhayb was serene, and my watering place
My time in Al-Udhayb was clear to me,
in that sanctuary was sweet to the taste and clear.
As was my valley there, sweet and pure water.

And I thirst with longing for al-Ghamīm and its water,
Consolation for the grieving, its water
as it courses, flowing through those leafy groves.
Flowing through those vineyards.

And I have never ceased to weep over the dwelling's traces at al-Liwā,
Still I cry for the home of my tribe,
and Zarūd's sands, al-Naqā, and al-Maṭālī.
The sands of Zaroud, An-Naqa, and the hills,

At evening I conceal my longing, while my eye draws forth
In the evening I hide my love, my eyes
tears like scattered pearls, plain to see.
Shed tears like the clouds pouring in the valley.

بعبرة ثكلى تنزف الدمع قانيا
I yearn with bereaved women's yearning, and clothe myself
I moan with the grief of the bereaved women,
in a bereaved mother's weeping as she sheds blood-red tears.
My tears of loss flow copiously.

لتسمعه هدَّ الجبال الرواسيا
A yearning that, if the firm-set mountains inclined toward it
If only the stable mounts could hear my longing,
to hear it, would shatter those steadfast mountains.
It would make even mountains fall.

And had Ibn al-Riḍā not granted me his unalloyed favor,
If not for Ibn Ar-Rida answering my distress,
I would never, through all time, have been content with my fate.
I would not have been pleased with my life.

Possessed of a resolve to whose like the sword bows,
A brother of Azma, meaning the sword for the like of it,
and possessed of a leap that fells ravening lions.
With a leap that brings down the fierce lions.

So, were people's complaints not a means to an end,
If not for people's complaints being an excuse,
I would swear he had left no complainer in the world.
I would swear none would remain complaining.

He is the surging sea; he is the radiant full moon.
He is the sea roaring, the moon shining,
He is the pouring rain; he is the charging lion.
The rain pouring, the lion prowling.

He is the keen, cutting sword which, if you brandished it,
He whose sword, if brandished,
would blunt the cutting Yemeni blade with its two edges.
Would make the Persian skulls in Yemen roll.

Another day he distances himself from glory.

You were graciously pleased with me for my sincere servitude,
I am content with the sincerity of servitude,
thus you angered my enviers and outwitted my foes.
Angering rivals and enemies.
