Toward the eastern side of the land of Babylon

the east and south winds blow, bearing my longings.

Longing recalls it to me whenever Dhukā, the sun, rises

at forenoon over its hollows, and whenever sunset comes.

Whenever I remember the ravine at Babylon’s foot,

Shaʿūb, clumsy-handed Death, flings me away.

I yearn like a camel herd driven from drinking its fill,

straying beside the sweet, abundant water, circling in thirst.

    فطالت حزون بيننا وسهوب

    My fate turned hostile to me and scattered my companions;

rugged tracts and open plains stretched far between us.

until a stoop and gray hair overtook me.

God curse an age whose arrows are forever

nocked, shooting at us and striking home.

O our beloved, distant exile has borne you away,

and loosed the eyelids’ bonds: they pour like great buckets.

My eye refuses to taste sleep,

as though sleeplessness had posted a guard over it.

So between my eyelids and sleeplessness there is peace,

but between my pillow and slumber there are wars.

Whenever we visit each other, despite the distance between us,

it is our livers and our hearts that exchange visits.

Mine is travel in midday heat atop the camels’ saddles,

and mine is tireless toil before the swift she-camels.

I have not taken omens at dawn from creatures crossing leftward,

nor from the raven of parting, though it croaks.

Nor are the camels swaying in their girths, vying to devour

the desert’s soil, bearing us out at dawn and back,

lowing beneath the night, hurtling onward with the riders,

    with secret sighs and weariness,

yearning for the valley, swift-striding, exhausted—

how far from the valley are spent old she-camels!

The mirage’s gleam spoke in the radiance of forenoon

of rippling, brimming water, so they press onward—

more filled with longing than my heart at evening, as I turn back,

calling to you in sorrow, while you do not answer.
