    We would console you, if consolation could help, O youth of glory,

    For a woman buried in the heart, not in the grave’s soil.

    Glory’s consort—rather, the peerless pearl of a vast sea—

    Resolved to leave the court of the peerless scholar.

    The inescapable drove her onward; and can you see

    Any escape for her from death’s throes once they are brought on?

    So, against all wishes, evening found her at the brink of decay,

    Though yesterday morning she was the necklace’s central jewel.

    You arrived and encountered calamities in a single hour,

    As though you and calamities had an appointment then.

    You wished to meet her, yourself safe from death,

    And there she was—but in the fangs of death, the destroyer.

    How grievous for the beloved, on his return, to find

    His beloved, neither answering nor beginning to speak.

    كعهدك ما زالت على الحفظ للعهد

    For in parting she broke no covenant or pledge;

    As you knew her, she remained faithful to the pledge.

    فهل أنت ترعاها على النأي والبعد

    Nor has she ceased to care for you through distance and separation;

    Will you, then, care for her despite remoteness and distance?

    فإنك جلدٌ والسى للفتى الجلد

    So, youth of lofty rank, restrain your anguish with consolation;

    For you are steadfast, and consolation befits the steadfast man.

    For no woman lives on by earnest effort, nor can a man

    Ward off Death himself with jest or earnest effort.

    فمن غبّ عن ورد كمن عبَّ بالورد

    And each has a draught prepared for him that he will swallow;

    So he who skips a turn at water is like him who drinks deep there.

    And one thing that dispels ill fortune is that her child’s

    Omen has proved auspicious beneath your fortunate star.
