ونأى لا نأى الحبيب الخليل
Departure has grown urgent among the companions—may it never do so!
Earnestly, earnestly, with this mixture of departure
And the beloved, the dear friend, has gone far away—may he never do so!
And remoteness, not remoteness, of the beloved friend

O my two friends, the north wind is a messenger
O my beloved! The north wind is a messenger
From me to you—or the east wind and the Qabūl breeze.
To you from me, or youth and acceptance

My night has lengthened because of you both; enough for me
My night on you is long, and for me
That my short night is long in loving you.
My short night with you is long

If you two turn away or grow weary, I
Whether you incline or tire, I
Have not turned from you two; another, not I, is the one who tires.
Have not tired of you, though others are bored

A state that never turns away from loving you.
Regarding love of you does not change

My state was created in love of you
It is my longing and my inborn tears.
It is my fervor, my flowing tears

They tossed my terrified heart about and said,
They tossed my frightened heart, and said
'Fickle, changeable!'—yet there is no change.
It tossed and turned, with no changing

A spiteful foe has spread slander, and a tale-bearer has rebuked;
The slanderer slandered, the faultfinder found faults
A blamer has made accusations, and a reproacher has blamed.
The blamer blamed, the complainer complained

I have agony in them, sadness flows
And deadly love, and streaming tears,
And fatal passion, tears pouring down

And anguish, devotion, and love
And sighing, plaintive cries, and wailing.
And sighing, moaning, and wailing

O beautiful one, hostile to kindness—yet
O beautiful ones, return to me, beautiful one, but
Whatever the beautiful one does is beautiful.
No matter what the beautiful one does, it is beautiful

I complain to you of some of the heat of burning thirst,
Some hot agony doubted
Which my breast could not contain; all of me is burning thirst.
The ardency did not fit it, yet I am all agony

Give us hope of your nearness, and keep putting us off;
They faulted us for your nearness, they deprived us
Perhaps, through you, such consolation will help me.
That my fervor for you have justification

They spread sorrow in the lands, and here are
Are rough tracts and plains traversed without a path.
Sorrows that have been forced upon me

A heavy burden of love arising from passion.
Have the heavy burden of love's passion

Whenever the riding beast inclines with me

I call out, "Incline!" For I have inclining wings

Ruin, ruin! Either, either!
Since the march has balked, then an easy trot, an easy trot!
Since the slanderer refused, then the trunk, the trunk!

I have a question for the abode and investigating
On a day with many a questioner, and none to be questioned.
How many days, O questioner, with no answerer?

Standing, I seek the messenger in bewilderment:
Standing, I recited to the messenger, "Astray!"
Is there a guide? And where is the guide for me?
Is there a guide, and where is my guide from me?
