ومنسرح من أيمن الجزع باللوى

ومنسرح من أيمن الجزع باللوى

أرحت به حيث المراد خصيب

And at a grazing-ground on the valley’s right-hand bend at al-Liwā,

And an open expanse on the right of the valley bend at al-Liwā—

I let them rest, where the pasture we sought was lush.

I rested there, where desire finds fertile ground.

وماليَ فيه مأرب غير أنه

دعاني عهد للحبيب قريب

I had no purpose there, except that

So I eased the hollow-eyed camels straining at their nose-rings,

So I gave respite to narrow-eyed camels snorting through their nose-rings,

when the journey’s rugged hardship had afflicted them with exhaustion.

overtaken by weariness from the hardships of the journey.

وإني امرؤ قطع المفاوز والربى

وإني امرؤ قطع المفاوز والربى

حبيب إليه أو يقيم حبيب

حبيب إليه أو يقيم حبيب

For I am a man to whom crossing desert wastes and hills

وقومي نزالون في كل مجهل

مخيف ولو ان المقام جديب

however fearsome, even if the stopping-ground is barren.
