    Turn aside to Saʿdi’s dwelling at Dhu al-Sanad,

    and ask the campsite, with its tent pegs and poles, to speak.

    Perhaps someone in the dwelling has news and will tell us

    what was there before tomorrow, for the day after tomorrow.

    فهل تأبّد فيها حادث الأبدِ

    I knew it when it was new, its fresh beauty flourishing;

    has Time’s calamity, then, settled there forever?

    Pour forth your tears, and clothe yourself in them with full-length mail,

    a roomy coat David wove from interlocking rings.

    فالحب مغرىً بأهليه على الفندِ

    Do not be overzealous in reproaching lovers for folly;

    for love is bent on bringing its people to folly.

    فالعين يخلج فيها عائر الرمد

    Lend my eyelids glances at them from close by;

    for the sting of inflammation throbs within the eye.

    If Time humbles you, do not seek refuge in it, lest you be

    like the wild ass fleeing in fear toward the lion.

    فما ابن آدم إلا عرضة الكمدِ

    Do not despair, though you have suffered anguish;

    for the son of Adam is nothing but a target for anguish.

    لا تحسبنَّ جميع العيش في الرغد

    Life is only toil followed by ease;

    do not suppose that all of life consists of ease.

    And while man remains innately disposed to envy,

    man’s only bane is the state of envy.

    فغفرةُ الليث منهُ موضعُ الكتدِ

    Do not fret over Time’s burden as you bear it;

    for the lion’s mane lies at its withers.

    Among people are those who carry the world on one shoulder,

    with a valiant lion’s resolve, not a small sheep’s.

    Why do my aims refuse me, though I pursue them,

    and why have I returned from them only empty-handed?

    The young Bactrian she-camels sped with me at forenoon,

    with Mahri camels’ swift stride; but for longing, they would not have sped.

    I reached this lion’s jugular at dawn, alone,

    darkness my saddle, on a sturdy, firm-built she-camel.

    It is as though I, with Time’s daughters toying with me,

    pass the evening in fetters amid Time’s deceits.

    وهل يعوَّل في الدنيا على أحد

    So I rely on no one in this world;

    and can anyone in this world be relied upon?

    When will you see me unencumbered across the horizons,

    evening and morning, racing ahead on a sleek steed?

    Far from sleep is an eye that has drunk, amid the depths

    of sleeplessness, the surge of the foam-crested sea.

    The blows of separation have left me no endurance,

    or left me mere skin, with no endurance.
