لقد فتح الشبلي للمرتضى بابا

علا بعلي ذروة العرش أعتابا

Indeed, al-Shibli opened a gate for al-Murtada,

Whose thresholds, through Ali, rose above the summit of the Throne.

وحيث رأى الصحن الشريف تعاكفت

عليه وفود تبتغي الرفد طلابا

And when he saw the sacred courtyard thronged

With delegations there, petitioners seeking bounty,

على المنهل الحوض الروي تزاحمت

وفي الحوض ساقي الحوض يملأ أكوابا

They jostled at the watering place, the brimming pool,

And at the pool, the pool’s cupbearer fills cups.

فشادله باب رفيعاً يود لو

يقوم عليه الدهر رضوان بوابا

So he built him a lofty gate, wishing that

Ridwan might stand at it forever as gatekeeper.

ودام مدى الأحقاب باباً مشيداً

وخير صنيع الخير مادام أحقابا

And may it endure through the ages, a towering gate;

The finest good deed is one that lasts for ages.

هو الشبل لاغاب له فيكنُّه

ولم أرشبلا قط لم يفترش غابا

He is the lion cub, with no thicket to shelter him;

And never have I seen a lion cub that did not bed in a thicket.

ولا يكل الحرب الزبون لغيره

وكم وكل لم يشهد الحرب هيابا

He entrusts fierce warfare to no other,

And many a weakling has never faced war, being fearful.

تراه إذا ما الحرب ألقت قناعها

بمعترك الهيجاءا أو كشرت نابا

You see him, when war casts aside her veil

In the thick of battle, or bares a fang,

يشب لظاها بالأنسة والظبى

فبالرمح طعاناً وبالسيف ضرابا

Kindling her blaze with spearheads and blades:

With the spear he thrusts fiercely, and with the sword he strikes hard.

يسد من الثغر المخوف انشعابه

برأي كسيب الحية الذكر أنسابا

He seals the fissures of the perilous frontier

With a plan that glided like a male serpent.

ومذ وقع الشبلي في باب حيدر

وجيز خطاب قد تضمن أطنابا

And when al-Shibli inscribed upon Haydar’s gate

A concise address that contained much elaboration,

ترصع بالسبع الواري فأرخوا

نعم فتح الشبلي لحيدرة بابا

It was adorned with the radiant seven; so record the date:

Yes, al-Shibli opened a gate for Haydara.
